NYCN LAGOS EAST TAKES THE FIGHT AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND CULTISM TO SCHOOLS
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Lagos State Chapter (Lagos East Senatorial District) recently hosted a sensitization campaign against drug abuse in schools beginning from Ishawo Comprehensive High School, Ishawo Agric, Ikorodu. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the State Deputy Chairman, Vice Chairman (Lagos East) , members of the Scout and Coordinators from Lagos East.
A Timely Intervention:
The campaign was a timely intervention, given the alarming prevalence of substance abuse among secondary school students in Lagos State. According to recent studies, 8.3% of students reported using illicit drugs, with opiates, codeine-contained cough syrups, and tramadol being the most commonly used substances. This trend is alarming and necessitates a collective effort to prevent drug abuse among young people.
Empowering Young Minds:
The campaign was designed to empower young minds with knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about drug abuse. Students were advised to shun cultism and drug abuse, and encouraged to join voluntary organizations affiliated to the youth council that can positively influence their lives. These organizations include:
- *The Scout Organization*: promoting character development, citizenship training, and outdoor education
- *Red Cross*: fostering humanitarian values and providing emergency assistance
- *Boys Bridge*: empowering young males through mentorship and skills development
- *Girls Guild*: supporting the growth and development of young females through mentorship and skills development among others
A Call to Action:
The NYCN Lagos State Chapter (Lagos East Senatorial District) is calling on all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and community leaders, to join the fight against drug abuse. We must work together to create a safer and healthier environment for young people in Lagos East.
In conclusion, the sensitization campaign against drug abuse in schools was a huge success, organizers appreciate the support of all stakeholders involved. The NYCN Lagos State Chapter (Lagos East Senatorial District) under the able leadership of Comr Asoro Abubakri Olatunji ACArb (Vice Chairman) promises to continue to work tirelessly to promote awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to empower young people with knowledge and skills to make informed decisions.
